Evaluation Question Five - How did you attract/address your audience?

So how did we attract and address our audience?

After much discussion during the production of the film, we wanted to aim at making the opening as ‘memorable’ as possible for our target audience of 15 years of age to 25 years of age. Doing this, we made sure we had short takes on each clip that you see in the opening to not ‘drag out’ the opening for too long. Also, the music one of the members of the group had created helps make this opening memorable, due to the upbeat and fresh soundtrack in the background.
When the final cut of the film was finished, we showed this opening to two students in our age target, and received feedback from them.  The videos is below.

In order for the audience to connect with the characters, the story had to be as realistic as possible, so the arguing part on the bridge does reflect this and the realistic story could also affect the women’s alter-egos. If we had done an unrealistic story and an unrealistic setting, we felt the audience would not connect with the characters.
Also through the location, we wanted the audience to connect with the films setting too as it was vital, due to us aiming for young British audiences this would hopefully help the audience when watching the film.

Evaluation Question Four - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question Three - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Elements Film Opening: Production Day Two

On Monday 27th February 2012 we continued filming only this time with Jess who plays the characters 'Scarlett' in the opening. There were different weather changes as it was late afternoon and the sun was out, but the last shoot it was darker. This did not effect the filming though as we waited for the clouds to pass the sun in order to get the correct lighting.

I started to film at the beach in which are character (Scarlett played by Jess) is sitting before receiving a text and walking off. Pete wanted to make the shots perfect and improve on last times shoot with the other two protagonists. I was picking up much of the wind through the cameras microphone as we were near the sea but I only shot when it had calmed down. I and the others wanted to keep mainly on 'eye line' with this character so the audience could connect with her in a way, much like the other protagonists in the film.

I was very worried about filming on the bridge, me and the others had to be very careful of not revealing where we shot Zoe and Effie's scenes as they were not there this day. As it was getting later and the sun was drawing to a close I had to quickly film these scenes in order of the continuity to be right from the last shoot. Again we wanted to keep eye level with Jess as much as possible so we did so. The day overall was a success and we had a discussion (Pete and Ash) after the shoot, organising what we could do about the sound during the editing and came to the conclusion that with out getting rid of it, just change the audio volume and gain in order of not to much distortion during the scene.

Elements Film Opening: Production Day One

On February 25th 2012 we started on production of our two minute film opening and was the first of another day to come. We have only three main protaginists in this opening but only one of the actresses was not available that day to film due to other comittments. So we decided to go ahead by filming just Effie and Zoe (Autumn and Flo) doing mainly their scenes and when Jessica (Scarlett) would be available, do hers another day. The only problem we had was that at one point in the opening they are all together, but we managed to cheat this with the use of camera angles.

We started to shoot Effies scene in which it is her first appearence. The arcade was very quiet and not many problems happened during the shoot. When filming director Pete Wall asked me to do some shots that do not appear in the storyboard. The reason for this was mainly because during post-production, we would be able to have a variety of shots to choose and place in the main edit if the orginal storyboard shot did not work.

This is me filming the last of Effies solo scenes in the park (Bournemouth). Pete came up with some really good shots that were not in the storyboard once again and I suggested while there to do a backwards tracking shot of Effies character walking through the park to show her facial expressions and mood during this scene.

Because Jess was not available for the shoot and her character was in a scene with the girls (when re-united), we cheated the shot by keeping Effie and Zoe in a two-shot together (also doing close-ups) and decided when Jess was available, shoot her scenes on the location they were and hopefully, the weather is fine.

'Elements' Opening: Distribution

I and the others decided that the main distributor company would be 'Momentum pictures' as it is one of the main leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland.

'Momentum Pictures' has released similar films to ours (Elements) such as 'Limitless' which is about a person who has special abilities. The company is more likely to distribute our film has the same type of genre as there original films they released have. Also, the opening present our protagonists as British, using locations in the U.K and a "British Feeling" onto the screen, instead of the Americanised superhero films that are seen on the silver screen. .

'Elements' Opening: Company Logo

Recently we have come up with the design of our main production company logo for "Supernova productions". I and the others wanted to keep close with the "Marvel" title card that appears before their feature films, which is short and starts with comic pages being flipped through then slowly fades into the official production logo. I used this idea because it is close with the genre of our film and would most likely be recognisable to audiences.

The official Logo which will appear before the opening in order to get noticed.

'Elements' Opening: Titles Order

I watched the film opening of the superhero movie "Iron Man 2" to understand the order of how the titles appear for the film (e.g production comapny, names, etc). It is important to do this so I can give a more authentic look to our film. I wrote down the order theses titles appear during the opening.

1.) Distribution Company
2.) Production Company
3.) 'A ----- Film" Director
4.) Names Cast Members
5.) Producer
6.) Director
7.) Main Title Card

I also looked at another Film title/opening that is not in our genre, but still could work either way. The following is the opening of "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and mainly animatics, but now concentration on the order of the titles. The order is different as the main title card comes earlier than later.

1.) Distribution Comapny
2.) Production Company
3.) Cast Members
4.) Main Title Card
5.) Cast Memebers (CON'TD)
6.) Crew
7.) Producer
8.) Director

I continued to watch movie opening titles and came across the opening titles for "Casino Royale". Very similar to the "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" sequence.

1.) Distribution Company
2.) Production Company
3.) Cast Members
4.) Main Title Card
5.) Cast Members (CON'TD)
6.) Crew
7.) Producer
8.) Director

'Elements' Opening: Filming Schedule

I disscussed that it would take only one day to film everything starting at an early time (9am-10am)  during the week after half-term (25th/26th). I do not mind what the weather will be as long as it is constant due to continuity, if there weather changes during the day of filming we would may need to do quick re-shoots.

'Elements' Opening: Costume

I would like to mainly represent the three main protagonists status in the world of today, so each of them would wear different types of clothing to show this. The character of Flo is a very normal person and has the life of a normal citizen, so we will be keeping her costume basic and relate to others. But for Autumn and Scarlett, I will choose certain parts for each of their costumes.

Autumn is a rich and successful person, so the actress will be wearing a pencil skirt, a descent blazer and a blouse.

For the character of Scarlett who is unemployed and living low, she will be wearing clothes that are creased, too small on her and maybe a trench coat (long and green) that she wears constantly which would be raggedy to show the age of the clothes and her status in life.

'Elements' Opening: Animatic

When I finished creating the storyboard for our opening, I took pictures of each individual board and stitched them together to see what it would look like with a rough timing of the opening.
(There is no sound)

"Elements" Opening: Locations

Location
We will be filming mainly in Bournemouth for the short film opening; for each section of the girls scenes they will be allicated in different areas of the town until the meet up outside a cafe.

For the first scene the character of Scarlett is beside the sea and looking out to the sea. We will be shooting here because it is a big contrast and will re-enforce the contrast between the three peoples lives.  Then when recieving a text from the other character (Flo) she will walk from this spot into the main town.

Scarlett will continue through the main Park in Bournemouth (look at Autumns scene below).

Effie's scene takes place inside the arcade in Bournemouth and stops outside entrance of it too read the text. Then we would film her walking through the main gardens of the town. (same as Scarlett)

We will be using this cafĂ©'s exterior for the end of the opening and the continuing dialogue of the film opening. This cafe gives a sought of modern world for the film as it is a very fresh and different looking cafe than others.

"Elements" Opening: The Protagonists

We are soon to go into Production of our movie opening and have finally found
the actresses who will be playing the main protagonists in our project. The three
girls we have picked take Drama A-Level in our school and we have seen them
act, they seemed to be the perfect choice for the job.

Zoe Chapple as Flo

The character of Flo is the most mature out of the three characters and we needed
an actress who looked like a strong character and able to be a surrogate sought of
mother to the other two. We thought Zoe was the perfect choice due to her look
and off course her acting is very good. I like to relate Zoe's look to '
Invisibility Woman' in the "Fantastic 4" movies who is also a strong character
to the superhero group.

Effie Robinson as Autumn

Effie has a very powerful look to her in which we thought would fit perfectly with
the character of 'Autumn' as the character is a successful woman who earns a lot of money.
Effie was the perfect choice for Autumn due to her acting and also, we want the audience
to be able to understand the characters status (which is high). The character is written and
hopefully performed very stereotypical on rich people, for example the voice needs to be
posh and how she would hold bags of shopping or hold her mobile phone.

Jessica Young as Scarlett

The character of Scarlett is a unemployed young woman who is a bit of a rebel and still acts
like a teenager most of the time. Jessica was our main person to play Scarlett as she is a
strong actress and had the look to her we wanted. The character also is not a very
fashionable person so we wanted to make sure that even though this character was
unemployed and hardly has a living, she still had an interesting look to her.

"Elements" Opening: Pre-Production - The Script

We decided that even though this was a two-minute opening, we decided to create a script in order to know what are opening was going to be and play out like instead of just scraps of notes. The script took about Two weeks to complete as we had done a script and then re-wrote it as there were a few changes needed to be made (thanks to Pete). Also we agreed to place in a page of dialogue for if we have space to place it within the two minute opening.

"Elements" Opening: Pre Production - Target Audience

Our target audience is aimed mainly at both sexes between the ages of 15-25 and is aimed at a mainstream audience with the chance of changing the audiences taste into films and even becoming film buffs.

Films such as the Spider-Man trillogy (Sam Rami) and the recent Batman trilogy (Christopher Nolan) are mainly aimed at Male audiences and minor female audiences. So I researched into more Female targeted films such as "Elektra" because we wanted a mix and it seems this film aims at both Male and Females of 15-30 years of age. This film got mixed reviews and did average at the box office which means it did well.
